SHORT / RISK CHECKLIST

A short idea needs more than a falling price

A sharp decline can attract attention, but it does not establish that a position is borrowable, liquid or well-defined. A short can move against you quickly, and losses can theoretically be unlimited.

Check the mechanics before the thesis

A short sale generally involves borrowing shares, selling them, then buying shares later to return to the lender. Your broker controls availability and may change terms. Confirm current availability, borrow charges and the broker's close-out rules directly; a scanner cannot reserve a locate or guarantee that shares remain available.

Borrow costs, margin requirements and distributions can affect a position while it is open. Review the actual terms with your broker before acting. The SEC explains that a short position can lose more than the original amount because a stock's price can continue rising.

Separate a catalyst from a price pattern

  1. Read the original filing or issuer release and note its time. Distinguish new facts from repetition, commentary and unverified claims.
  2. Check the security's liquidity, spread and trading status. Volume alone does not show how much size can be entered or covered near the displayed price.
  3. Ask what would disprove the thesis. A fast rise, a halt or a new disclosure can change the situation before an order can be adjusted.
  4. Estimate borrow charges, transaction costs and adverse price gaps over the intended holding period. Do not assume a stop order caps the loss at its trigger price.
Research cueWhat still needs verification
Unusual volumeDollar liquidity, spread, venue coverage and whether activity persists
Negative catalystPrimary source, materiality, publication time and what is already known
Price extensionCurrent borrow availability, squeeze exposure, halts and exit liquidity
High short interestMeasurement date and source; it is not a live locate or a timing signal

Make the decision reviewable

Before any order, write down the source, borrow confirmation, maximum exposure you are prepared to accept, the invalidating condition and what you will do if the market is halted. Revisit the record later, including situations you chose not to trade. A ranking or alert cannot account for every broker restriction or changing market condition.
