VOLUME / RESEARCH PROCESS
Unusual volume is a question, not an answer
A busy tape tells you that participation has changed. It does not tell you who is right, whether the move will continue, or whether you can exit at the displayed price.
Start with a fair comparison
Relative volume is a comparison with a baseline. The baseline matters as much as the result. Comparing a stock's first ten minutes with an entire typical trading day can hide an unusually active open. Comparing the same elapsed portion of several prior sessions is a more coherent starting point.
Before acting on an RVOL number, check its definition: cumulative or per-bar, regular session or extended hours, mean or median, and how many historical sessions are included. Treat missing history as missing, not as normal volume.

Read four measurements together
| Measurement | Useful question |
|---|---|
| Relative volume | How different is participation from the selected baseline? |
| Dollar volume | How much money is actually changing hands? |
| Spread and depth | How costly and uncertain could an entry or exit be? |
| Price response | Is new participation sustaining the move, or failing to move price? |
A low share price can produce an impressive share count without much dollar liquidity. A burst on one bar can also disappear quickly. Use the chart to inspect the sequence rather than treating one ratio as a complete setup.
Find the explanation
- Open the original company release or filing and check its timestamp.
- Check whether the story is genuinely new, a repeated item, or a promotional claim.
- Compare price and volume before and after publication.
- Record what would invalidate your interpretation before considering a trade.
Build a reviewable process
Save the baseline, catalyst source, spread, intended risk and decision timestamp in a journal. Review both the names you traded and the ones you skipped. A scanner that finds dramatic moves is not necessarily a scanner that finds executable, profitable opportunities.
