Unusual volume tells you that participation changed. It does not tell you which way price goes next. In this worked example, three million shares have traded by ten thirty. The average at ten thirty across ten prior sessions is one million shares. Three million divided by one million gives relative volume of three times. These are sample inputs, not live market data.

The comparison only makes sense when the baseline matches. Use the same ticker, session start, data source, and cutoff time. Comparing ten thirty today with full day volume answers a different question. Half days, halts, stock splits, missing data and unusual sessions can distort the result. Check the individual sessions, not just the average.

Next, investigate the context. Open the original news release or filing. Confirm its timestamp and what actually changed. Check liquidity, spreads and trading halts. If researching shorts, check borrow availability and cost with your broker. Define risk and what would disprove your idea before entering. Record the evidence and the eventual result, including fees and slippage. None of this guarantees a profitable trade.

THE CALCULATION

Like-for-like volume.

Download the field guide (PDF) ↓

RVOL = today's cumulative volume / mean of prior sessions' cumulative volume at the same cutoff.

A reading of 3x means three times your sample's average. Comparing a partial session with full-day totals answers a different question. Keep the data provider and session definition consistent; half-days, halts, splits and missing data can distort comparisons.
